ATS resume format for India

An ATS-friendly resume in India looks plain, fits two pages, uses one column, and carries the exact words of the job you're applying for. Nothing about it is specific to India except a few habits that are worth dropping, and one or two worth keeping. If you haven't yet, it helps to know how an ATS reads your resume first.

The structure that parses

  1. Name on its own line.
  2. One headline with your role, for example Senior Software Engineer. Use the title the job posting uses, when it honestly describes your work.
  3. Contact line: city, phone, email, LinkedIn. In the body of the page, never in the page header.
  4. Summary: two or three lines. Role, years, the stack or domain you work in.
  5. Skills: grouped, and only things you could discuss for five minutes.
  6. Experience: newest first. Company, title, dates, then bullets.
  7. Education below experience, once you have a year or more of it. Freshers lead with education, and should.
  8. Certifications, projects, languages if they help the application.

Length and bullets

One page up to about three years of experience, two pages after that. Aim for 400-900 words in total. Keep each bullet between about 10 and 35 words: shorter says nothing, longer gets skimmed. Start with a verb, and put the result early.

Weak: Responsible for backend development and bug fixing.
Better: Built the orders API that now serves 2 lakh requests a day, and cut repeat defects by 30% with a review checklist.

Naming the file

Recruiters save hundreds of these. Rahul_Sharma_Software_Engineer.pdf is easy to find later; resume_final_v2.pdf is not, and it reads as careless.

Check it, don't guess

Our ATS score checks the six things that decide whether a parser can read you: readable text, standard sections, contact details, bullets with results, length, and one date format. It's free, rule-based, and it explains every point.
